Don’t call it a comeback….Yet

Yes Louisville beat Murray State 21-9 and at the end of the day coaches, players, and fans will take a win no matter how bad they looked getting it……and Louisville didn’t look too awesome last night. I understand that it was the first game of the season. I understand that Louisville had 18 players playing their first collegiate game…ever. I understand all of that. I also understand that Louisville has a lot to work on.

Two things that stood out the most last night were the turnovers and the penalties. Louisville was lucky enough to be playing a school that (1) turned the ball over as much they did and (2) couldn’t capitalize off of their turnovers. The Big East is by no means a power conference in football, but Louisville still needs to take care of the ball if they want to compete. As for the penalties….there is no excuse. Penalties show a lack of discipline and the bottom line is that Louisville has to do better.

I  will say that Will Stein looked OK last night. I see his potential as a great college QB and I’m excited to see how he will progress as the season unfolds. As for Teddy Bridgewater, my first thought is that if it is at all possible for him to redshirt then that is what he needs to do. Maybe you can chalk his one and only drive up to nerves……maybe. I personally don’t want to find out so let’s just hope that Stein matures into a decent QB and stays healthy. All in all I think that this Louisville team has a lot of upside. While they aren’t quite up to par with the Bobby Petrino era of Cardinals they are well on their way.
