Five Things Your Gynecologist Wants You to Know

1.  I am not judging you.

Please be honest about your medical and sexual history.  I’m not asking to be nosy.  The information you provide helps me determine the appropriate tests and a plan of care.

2.  Your health information is confidential

If you see me at church talking to your girlfriend, rest assured that your doctor’s visit is not our topic of conversation.  I am legally and ethically obligated not to share your personal information with anyone.

3. It’s okay if you didn’t shave.

No, really!  It’s okay!  When I say it doesn’t matter, I’m not just trying to be polite.  And please don’t come late to your appointment or cancel just because you had to stop by Walgreens for a Lady Bic.

4.  An infection is a diagnosis, not a judgement

If I call to tell you about a positive test for an infection, you may wonder what I am thinking.  Truthfully, my only concern at that moment is giving you appropriate treatment.  I do not assign a moral judgement to a lab result.  Refer to item #1

5.  Please ask questions in the office.

Communication is the foundation of any doctor-patient relationship.  If you have questions about a health issue during an office visit, please don’t be shy about asking.  If you don’t understand my explanation about something, let me know.  Being an active participant during your visit will help me to help you.
