Louisville 24….Kentucky 17
Louisville beat Kentucky 24-17 Saturday to take the Governor’s Cup. Although a victory is a victory both teams came out of that game realizing that they still have a long way to go before they can compete with any respectable football team.
Louisville’s defense still has a million things that it needs to work on especially in the secondary. After allowing a non BCS conference team like FIU pick them apart the week before, they made Kentucky’s QB Newton look….dare I say decent. Kentucky averaged just 105.5 passing yards per game before Louisville allowed Newton to go a respectable 27/41 for 255 yards. However the Cards were able to hold the Cats to a less than respectable 35 yards on the ground.
There were a few bright spots for the Cards on Saturday. After Stein went out early in the game with a shoulder injury, backup Bridgewater came in and had a decent game. Bridgewater was 10/18 with 106 yards and 2 touchdowns. Bridgewater showed that he could be a respectable backup against a subpar (that’s putting it nicely) defense. Before Stein was sidelined with an injury he went 2/4 for 40 yards and a touchdown. If I’m Louisville Stein is still my QB if he’s healthy.
Regardless of who is the QB for Louisville the fact remains that they have looked pretty awful this season. The defense often times looks confused and the offense needs some consistency from the receiver position. This game very well may be the point where Louisville turns things around and becomes a better football team or this very well may be the best Louisville has to offer this season. Only time will tell.
