Support for HB70 (Gives felonies right to vote)

On Tuesday, January 24, 2012, the House Standing Committee on Elections, Constitutional Amendments, and Intergovernmental Affairs by a vote of 7 to 1 favorably reported HB70.  The bill proposes to amend Section 145 of the Constitution of Kentucky to allow persons convicted of a felony the right to vote after completion of their sentence.

Kentucky is one of only four states that disenfranchise all former felons and has the highest African-American disenfranchisement rate in the nation with nearly one of every four African-American ineligible to vote due largely to the disproportionate enforcement of the “war on drugs.”

The NAACP is requesting that you immediately contact your state representative and urge him or her to support and vote for HB70.

Thank you for your consideration of this request and please feel free to contact me if you need any additional information or have any questions.

Sincerely,

Raoul Cunningham
